About the study
You are being invited to participate in a research study titled “AI Use in EEG Data Processing.” This study is being conducted by Arnaud Delorme, PhD, Researcher in the Institute for Neural Computation at the University of California San Diego. You were invited because you are at least 18 years old, can read English, and conduct, support, evaluate, or are considering research involving EEG data processing or analysis.
The purpose of this study is to understand how researchers use generative AI assistants and automated methods when processing and analyzing EEG data. The study will examine current practices, verification approaches, perceived benefits and concerns, and needs for training and responsible governance.
Participation should take approximately 15 minutes. If you agree to participate, you will complete an online survey about your professional background, use of AI tools, tool configurations, EEG analysis tasks, verification practices, benefits, and concerns. Please do not enter your name or other identifying or sensitive information in free text responses.
Two terms used throughout
EEG processing refers to the steps that convert raw recordings into analyzable measures: import and montaging, filtering, bad-channel handling, re-referencing, artifact correction, epoching, baseline correction, time-frequency decomposition, source estimation, and the associated quality-control and statistical procedures.
Voluntary participation
Your participation is completely voluntary. Choosing not to participate or leaving the survey before submission will involve no penalty or loss of benefits. The survey requires responses to its closed response questions before submission. The final comment question is optional. Because submitted survey responses are anonymized, the research team will not be able to identify and remove an individual response after submission.
Risks
This study presents no more than minimal risk. You may experience mild discomfort when reflecting on professional practices, AI use, data governance, or feeling less useful or in control. There is also a small risk that an unusual combination of background answers or self-identifying free text could indirectly identify you. You may stop the survey at any time before submission.
Privacy and data handling
Survey responses are stored without direct identifiers. The survey does not record your IP address or browser user agent. Data will be stored on an access-controlled UC San Diego server, accessed only by authorized study personnel, and reported in aggregate. Small demographic groups will be combined or suppressed when needed. Survey data will be retained for at least three years after study completion and then securely deleted unless UC San Diego policy requires longer retention.
Payment and optional prize drawing
You will not be paid for completing the survey. A separate drawing offers three $500 prizes, totaling $1,500. Entry is open from September 1 through September 20, 2026, and does not require consenting to, completing, or submitting the survey. The form requests a university or research institution email address and accepts one entry per institutional email to reduce duplicate entries. Personal email addresses are not accepted. The email address is stored in a separate database table with no response ID or other link to your survey answers. It will be used only to administer the drawing and deleted after prize distribution and required administrative follow-up. No prize is guaranteed. Actual odds depend on the number of eligible entries. The entry page provides the full drawing terms.
Benefits
There is no direct benefit to you from participating. The study may help researchers understand current AI-assisted EEG practices and identify needs for training, verification, and responsible use.
